OH Amish Country

The Amish are a Protestant religious group that exists primarily in the United States and Canada. The Amish originally were Mennonites, but they broke away due to religious differences. After facing religious persecution in Europe, they migrated to Pennsylvania during the 1700s and then spread across the Midwest and into Canada. The first Amish people in Ohio arrived in the early 1800s. For the most part, they settled in northeastern Ohio.

To this day, most of these people still earn their living through agriculture. Most Amish refuse to use any modern-day conveniences such as automobiles, electricity, and phones. They dress conservatively and plainly. They have chosen to live this way because of not wanting to conform to the rest of the world as taught in the Bible.

Amish Country is a 3-5 county area of Ohio where approximately 40,000 Amish people live and work. It consists of Holmes County, Tuscarawas, Coshocton, and Wayne Counties. There are also Amish communities in neighboring Ashland and Knox counties and a settlement near Middlefield.

As you drive to Amish Country, you can view the natural beauty of rolling hills and groomed farmsteads. You will go back in time where life is much simpler. As they say, this is where old-fashioned living, hard work and honesty are a way of life. You can book a tour of the Amish countryside or leisurely tour it yourself. Either way, there is a lot to see.

The Amish are famous for making everything by hand. As you stroll through the land you can watch everything as it happens. You can watch cheese and chocolate candies being made. In the spring and autumn, you can observe horse drawn plows in the fields. You can watch a livestock auction or visit the farmer’s market. Stop by one of the many shops for free samples and recipes. Visit a craft shop for a hand-crafted souvenir, buy a quilt or bring home an antique from one of the antique shops.

After you have been walking around for a while and work up an appetite, stop by one of the many restaurants for some home cooking. All of the meals are made from scratch. You could even take the opportunity to have a meal in an authentic Amish home. If you saved room, be sure to stop by the bakery and pick up a home-made pastry that will melt in your mouth.

You don’t have to try to fit all of the activities in one day. You can stay the night at one of the Amish Inns, Hotels or Bed and Breakfast. The next day you will be fresh for your visit to the museums which feature Amish, Mennonite, German, American and Natural history. Also included is a glass and steam engine museum.

Come for the fun and leave with a better understanding of the Amish culture. When you see the horse-drawn buggies, you know you are in OH Amish Country.
